In a figurative sense, can "longhorn" refer to someone with lots of experience in a particular activity? For instance, "That Kiwanis group is mostly enthusiastic debutantes, but the longhorns do a great job of keeping them all on track." Or, "You longhorns of the Oklahoma Welcome Club, get over here."
