@DTLHS: Your suspicions are right. A more common form, in my experience, is loop line. Wikipedia has Loop line (railway), two near me are the Hounslow loop line and Kingston loop line, another is the Hertford loop line; the Hounslow and Hertford loops are secondary routes that leave a main line and then rejoin it a few miles later, the Kingston loop leaves one main line and joins another main line, so that trains out of London Waterloo run round the loop and return to Waterloo; trains on the Hounslow loop can also do that via a triangular junction at the outer end. I have no idea what form the looplines in the quotes take. DonnanZ (talk) 23:23, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

@DTLHS: I have created loop line and included two definitions that I know about. Further definitions can be added there, and if you're agreeable loopline can be converted to an alternative form. The quotations can stay there in any case. DonnanZ (talk) 19:50, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
