Slang![edit]

Sounds like slang to me! Or at least that's how it started out.

Compare Category:English_words_suffixed_with_-ectomy's bafflectomy.

I bet tylectomy was too fancy, so the doctors coined lumpectomy.

I mean it's not often in English that one just grabs some non-fancy "word that even kids use," and sticks a fancy Greek ending on the back.
