Standing in the Way more generally?[edit]

My dad often says ‘You make a better door than a window’ if I’m in the way of the fire, not just the TV. It seems to me that the meaning can extend to a general sense of ‘blocking light or heat’ or ‘being in the way’, not just ‘being in ones line of sight’. Do others use the expression in this way?
