@Ysrael214 I tried putting the bayà and mamayâ in the tl-IPA and they both phonologically matched:

• IPA^(key): /ˈbajaʔ/, [ˈba.jɐʔ]

• IPA^(key): /mamaˈjaʔ/, [mɐ.mɐˈjaʔ]

The book by Laktaw in 1914 seems to have been made later. Are there books made earlier than the 1860 Vocabulario de la lengua Tagala that also mention a "Mayâ" root? I didn't find a sole "maya" entry before besides the maya bird and recalling the maya in PayMaya, which I always thought was a sort of clipping whenever someone says "maya na 'yan" which they sometimes quickly correct to "mamaya na iyan" if they had time and wanted to say it in full.

yeah, if u mean the "pamayamaya", "magpamayamaya", "nagpapamayamaya" in the 1860 Vocabulario, there's "pamamahagi", "pamamalat-sibuyas", "pamamangka", "pamamaril", "pamamasura", "pamamagitan", "pamamahayag", "pamamanas", "pamamakyaw", "pamamana", "pamamanhikan", "pamamasada", "pamamasko", "pamamatay-tao", etc. although it feels grammatically weird if it is done before a word where the first vowel of the root is not -a- that I tried on this Category:Tagalog terms prefixed with mam-. @Ysrael214 maybe we should make a maya root word entry as well in maya since the 1613 Vocabulario also has an entry even though there's no examples of usage alone. I'm thinking kind of like the entry for baya (“toleration”) that is also obsolete and is also only used as a root or actually could it be that this "mayâ" root word is a sort of alternative form of baya (“toleration”)? @Mlgc1998 All of your examples do not apply: They're just pam-(nasalized redup CV). It can also produce pamumuna, pamumula, pamimintas, yet we don't have pa- + mum- nor pa- mim- prefixes. Applies as well with pananabik, pananalita, paninira, panunupil etc.

maya't maya/maya-maya has the same structure with iba't iba, iba-iba

and mamaya-maya with tatakbo-takbo

While old dictionaries sometimes fail with the root (ex. pananalig is from nalig according to old dictionaries but actually from salig), this don't seem to be the case with maya. Ysrael214 (talk) 12:51, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
