Not really convinced this is a Translingual prefix, so much as Nippon + -o- being used in New Latin compounds. Note that if this fails, its category needs to be deleted as well. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 20:17, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

I sent this to RFD before, where it only got one comment (Shinji, seemingly in favour of converting it to (New) Latin), and bd2412 closed it as no consensus. I'm not happy with that outcome, given the utter lack of people thinking this should remain a Translingual prefix, so I'm bringing it back. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 22:40, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
- It occurs as the first component of the genus names Nipponobuprestis, Nipponocis, Nipponocypris, Nipponogelasma, Nipponoharpalus, Nipponolejeunea, Nipponomyia, Nippononebria, Nippononeta, Nipponoolithus, Nipponophloeus, Nipponopsalididae, Nipponosaurus, Nipponoserica, Nipponosynuchus, Nipponotrophon, and Nipponotusukuru. If a prefix only occurs in translingual proper nouns, isn’t it a translingual prefix? (I now think we should classify such genus names as well as specific epithets as New Latin, but there is no consensus for that.) --Lambiam 23:12, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
- I notice that all of the genus examples are
Title Case, while the RFD nomination islower case. - If the only instances anyone can find of nippono- are in capitalized genus names, then effectively lower-case nippono- doesn't exist. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 17:04, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

- Also used in specific epithets such as nipponoborealis (Onychodactylus nipponoborealis) and nipponoca (Neostatherotis nipponoca) (entries in Wikispecies), nipponopilosa (in IRMNG), nipponoalpinum, nipponomontanus, nippononiveus (in Catalog of Life). DCDuring (talk) 00:18, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
