Synonym[edit]

Wikipedia lists "pause" as a synonymous term for this expression. I see nothing about this under our article on pause though. I can't find any references to support this but it might be a slang usage among rappers to check up on and possibly add. Etym (talk) 22:21, 10 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

context label[edit]

I would say that it is just {{lb|en|humorous}}. —Suzukaze-c 00:40, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Lacking note on implication of homophobia/acceptance[edit]

Most times I've encountered this term, it has at least seemed to be more about distancing oneself from the homosexual implications than to simply inform people that one is not actually suggesting anything homoerotic and/or outing oneself as gay. In fact it is often -- typically when meant humourously -- used in contrast to what's otherwise being said, i.e. they're saying something which is nigh explicitly homosexual, but are denying it, with a comedic result, and/or it affords them a thin veneer of plausible deniability (i.e. they are in some way trying to backtrack on something they said which is fairly expressly an indicator of their attraction to the same sex). Surely this analysis is at least as important as the information that's currently on offer, which solely mentions the literal, direct, non-deceitful, non-bigoted meaning.

It seems clear, especially from the fact that Wikipedia has managed to write an entire encyclopedia article on the topic, that we could stand to have some usage notes briefly explaining what kind of situations this would be used it—and yes, that it's homophobic; Dictionary.com has a strongly-worded usage note on this (ours could do to be more complex, given sarcastic/mocking uses). - -sche (discuss) 02:32, 8 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
