OK there's been a discussion about this [1] but the answer to "Can it be used with things other than "not long for this world, not long for this life" is yes. General Vicinity (talk) 02:06, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
This expression can be used in questions and statements of doubt with "if", eg "when the New Yorker wasn't even sure if he was long for the Senate and was considering running for governor" [2] so maybe it should be moved to long for with a usage note.
