Fake bet in gambling[edit]

A bet announced as "on top" is apparently a fake bet placed by a shill to encourage others. Source: Eric Partridge, Slang To-day and Yesterday (1970); also mentioned by Jonathon Green, who presumably got it from Partridge as with some other slang he documents.
