pitched battle[edit]
the term "pitched battle" is far more often used to mean "intense battle" than it is used to mean a "jointly preplanned battle". Go to google books, search, look at references old and new, and you will see what I mean. In fact, I was unable to find a single citation that from context unambiguously meant preplanned. also, a little etymology would be nice, does pitch come from thrown at one another, pitching a tent, or the British English sense of sport taking place on a pitch? 2603:8001:9500:9E98:0:0:0:9A7 16:29, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
