It is from Arabic قال مقال from قال + مقال. Kurdish, Persian, Mazandarani qāl maqāl are all form Arabic.--Calak (talk) 21:18, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

- @Calak, Vahagn Petrosyan: It is in Persian قالمقال (qâl-maqâl) (more luck in search with space instead of ZWNJ), قال و مقال (qâl-o-maqâl), قال قال (qâl-qâl). This is however based on Arabic قِيل وَقَال وَمَقَال (qīl waqāl wamaqāl), longer form of the قِيل وَقال (qīl waqāl) we have created graciously by our Düsseldorf IP, which exists also as Persian قیلوقال (qil-o-maqâl), and I have also a few hits for قَال وَمَقَال (qāl wamaqāl) – definite القَال وَالْمَقَال (al-qāl wālmaqāl) because otherwise you only get Persian hits, which alone shows that these Caucasian forms are presumably from Persian, as also that it does not go without the وَ (wa) in Arabic. - I think it's safe to assume that quoting Shanidze for the Georgian term will be okay. I'll change the etymology of აყალმაყალი (aq̇almaq̇ali), I also think Armenian one could well come from Persian and not Azerbaijani. - You can say the Georgian is from Persian, as it is ultimately from Persian, but I believe Persian (and Arabic borrowings) into Armenian and Georgian dialects all came via Turkic. There were almost no ethnic Persians in our lands during the rule of Muslim Persian empires. The day-to-day contact was with the Turks, nowadays renamed "Azerbaijanis".
