Derogatory?[edit]

Is this actually derogatory? I don't think I've ever heard it used as a slur. At worst, (at least in my experience) it might be used as affectionate ribbing, but my read is that it's more often an expression of pride in one's (community's) eccentricity.

…or maybe I'm just fortunate enough to have only finally come out publicly/writ large after moving to a (reputedly) fairly progressive city with a large queer population, where "keep Portland weird!" is a common slogan. Perdellian (she/they) (talk) 20:10, 12 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

I posted a request at the Tea room for someone to take a look at it. The original version created in 2010 was a mess and would have been deleted if it hadn't been fixed up. The person who fixed it up, however, knows more than I ever will about etymology but seems to have totally missed the connotations that come with "queer" in modern usage- and made a straight, generic entry out of it.
