without giving an etymology, the Latin entry gives rex (and some cognates) as Related terms.

i think rego is re- + ago / look at flexions: rectum = re- + actum

rex gave regno

there is a semantic proximity (in French régir is nearly only used as lead a State)

other opinions? sources?
