Some who say uː on its own nevertheless say ʊ in compounds[edit]

According to Longman Pronunciation Dictionary, some who say ruːm for this word on its own say rʊm in compounds such as bedroom. --Backinstadiums (talk) 10:03, 11 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

That's likely. Because in compounds with "room" as the second component, the lesser stress is an additional reason for a short vowel. 90.186.72.39 09:46, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Homophone with “rum”[edit]

Could we be more specific than “accents without foot-strut split” to describe those accents in which “room” and “rum” are homophones? I've added “some” because I guess the majority of accents without the FOOT-STRUT split (in northern England) use the long pronunciation of “room” (/ɹuːm/). I can't confidently name any accent in which they are homophones. John Wells' “Northern 2” would be my best guess, but maybe there are others. N4m3 (talk) 13:43, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
