The modern version is "parachute-like" as stated, but this probably wasn't always true. Chambers 1908 defines it as "a floating anchor used at sea in a gale" (i.e. floating on the sea, not in the air), and Wikipedia mentions "crude" older versions that may have been made of wood etc. Equinox ◑ 21:49, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
