"Without a shirt"[edit]
@Equinox, I'm wondering whether the first sense "without a shirt" is actually used. It seems that "a shirtless wardrobe" always refers to the subject baring his torso very often (i.e. sense 2), not that he doesn't have any shirts. The same with sunbathing, it seems to be used to mean that one's torso is bare. I wasn't able to find other usage examples for this sense. Hvergi (talk) 12:58, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- "Shirtless sunbathing" cannot be sense 2 because the habit of sunbathing has no torso. It's not possible for sunbathing to remove its shirt like a person can. Equinox ◑ 13:02, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- I'll have a quick search around. Gambling might be a good subject (people might be left shirtless if they gamble away even their clothes), as well as wardrobes, fashions, packed luggage, etc. Equinox ◑ 13:03, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Well, I give up. OED has: "1. Without a shirt; spec. (usually of a man) wearing no clothes above the waist; cf. topless adj. 2. Of an activity, image, etc.: involving or featuring a person or group not wearing a shirt or shirts." For sense 1 they have five citations, but it looks as though all five mean "not wearing a shirt"!
