Vietnamese translation[edit]

This Vietnamese translation of the term used by U.S. president Donald J. Trump has appeared in the Vietnamese press: hố phân. 76.189.141.37 06:49, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

That doesn't mean it's the proper translation. I've been reading many articles that choose to bowdlerise or modify the translation to suit their audience. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 08:48, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Metaknowledge: Yes, French translated as "pays de merde" (lit.: "shit country") but "merde" doesn't mean "shithole". Taiwan: 國家 / 国家 (niǎo bù shēng dàn guójiā) - "countries where birds don't lay eggs", Japan: 便所よう汚い (benjo no yō ni kitanai kuni) - "countries dirty as toilets". --Anatoli T. The Koreans newspapers translated as 거지 소굴 (geoji sogul, beggar's haunt). 'Thanks' to Trump, the East Asian transliterations have become popular: Korean 싯홀 (sithol) or 쉿홀 (swithol), Japanese シットホール (shittohōru). --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 07:42, 15 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wait a minute . . . if you could cite it, why did the RfV fail? Khemehekis (talk) 07:46, 21 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
