"State of matter" vs "phase"

I am confused about the difference between "state of matter" and the "phase", and which of the two is referred to by the Czech term "skupenství". Wikipedia's W:Phase (matter) distinugishes the two. Czech Wikipedia's article "Skupenství" has an interwiki link to "Phase (matter)", not to "State of matter". Googling confirms "state of matter" as the translation of "skupenství". My estimation too is for "state of matter". However, Googling fails tu refute that "skupenství" is sometimes used as a synonyms to "phase". --Daniel Polansky 10:40, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
