Dear Jeff,

I am sure that it is a daunting task to be an administrator of a project like Wictionary.org, so I do not take it personally that my recommendation for a second definition of "spamming" was deleted without discussion. But I would like to open some discussion.

Reminder:

Verb

spamming

  1. Present participle of spam.
  2. (slang) The practice of repeatedly posting useless, unthoughtful, and rushed contributions to electronic forums.

I teach composition at a community college and am surrounded by young people all year long. I started noticing that they have moved the definition of spamming well beyond its marketing parameters several semesters ago.

Here are some links to the usage I've defined as slang above:

http://community.livejournal.com/gaian_winnars/1374.html : "So I was spamming it up in the Chatterbox today. The great thing about the chatterbox is that people only post there for gold, so you don't really have to add to a conversation. Most people will just do a copy/paste message to put in every topic." Notice that this person mentions "you don't have to add to the conversation." This is at the heart of this proposed definition. Spamming no longer has to do specifically with marketing or advertising.

You dont even know me.. you wern't online, when i was spamming the forums."

Thanks very much for sharing with me about how I might also add to this project.
