Spey or Spay[edit]

I have corrected the presumptious assertion previously made by someone on Wiktionary that spey is a mispelling of spay. It is not, it is an alternative, widely used in some parts of the world and in the veterinary profession. 2A00:23C7:8904:9801:2D15:F8EE:6BAE:FD83 16:13, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Far from being presumptuous, the original author's proposed definition of "spey" as a misspelling of "spay" was the first time "spey" (lower case) had appeared in Wiktionary at all. It was intended to alleviate confusion among members of the public who may wish to look the word up after having seen it used in informal writing, the author having noted the mismatch between its widespread use and its formal acknowledgement. Prior to this, the only entry for the word was as a proper noun referring to a river. The hope was for this nonstandard spelling to eventually make its way into the established national dictionaries of the countries where it has become so common that it has possibly overtaken the formally correct spelling of the word in some sectors. 123.208.222.28 00:34, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
