Etymology: corruption of statera?[edit]

There are occasional suggestions that the word steelyard is a corruption of statera (e.g., as stilliard via stalier + -d or -ard, as in halyard, lanyard), but this looks implausible: it seems pretty clearly associated with the place, and simply replaced a similar but distinct Latinate word.
