Etymology

The current etymology seems to be complete guesses made by users, rather than something that can be sourced. An alternative look at the word by an Icelandic professor (Þorvaldur Friðriksson) is that it's of Gaelic origin (over 60% of female settlers in Iceland were Celtic), but his view has not prevailed. Unfortunately I cannot find the Gaelic word he assumes it's from.
