Old English.

I looked in Bosworth-Toller and in several sources that have etymologies for descendants, and they all list one or more of the alternative forms- but not this one.

This is the spelling used in the definition for the Old English Wiktionary entry for modern English "steel", but it's a redlink, there's nothing there to indicate what sources (if any) were consulted, and the only edits to that entry since it was created in 2007 are by bots. I see mentions of stī̆ele in numerous places online, notably here [[1]], [[2]], [[3]], and [[4]]; but no attestations (yet). In stȳle, the ȳ indicates an earlier more original īe diphthong, but this [[5]] has the form in question as unattested *stī̆ele from earlier *stīeli Leasnam (talk) 23:02, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
