Material for stockings (as far as I can tell). 1865, The Youth's magazine, or Evangelical miscellany (page 62): "When I was a young man, matter of two or three and twenty, I'd saved two or three pounds, for stockinging was uncommonly good when we were at war with Napoleon, so I thought I'd go to see my friends at Market Harborough."
