They give three definitions for our etymology 2 (the construction thing): (i) the first stone laid over columns or pilasters to form a cross vault; (ii) the central beam of a floor which receives the joists; (iii) any large piece of timber supported on two strong piers or posts, and serving as a lintel to a door, window, etc. Equinox 08:44, 2 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
