The spelling Swath is never used in British English as it is always spelt as Swathe and pronounced as such. I believe the word Swath is uniquely used in America. Perhaps, the reason this has not been pointed out here before is exactly because the American spelling of the word, and their pronunciation of it, is so completely unfamiliar to the British.
