@Morgengave Do you know which gender this word has? I'd normally expect it to be feminine, but the Vlaams woordenboek has it as masculine. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:45, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Lingo Bingo Dingo The word rol is indeed masculine in Belgian-Dutch and I am surprised to discover in the WNT that historically it was feminine! (From Latin rotula) The masculine gender may have come to life under influence of French rôle which is masculine. (From Latin rotulus) On the other hand, there are a few historically feminine words (e.g., groep) which have become masculine in Belgian-Dutch, and my general suspicion is that this is due to French influence (e.g., groupe). - @Morgengave Thank you, also for updating the gender. I wonder if the feminine gender in Northern Dutch is unetymological (e.g. the word and its gender derives via French rôle from Latin rotulus but the gender later adapted to rotula instead}}), but feminine genitives do seem more common than masculine genitives on Google Books. Results on DBNL do suggest that the oldest attestations from the 16th century were masculine. As for groep, I think the oldest attestation is in a Flemish text where the word is masculine.
