Sense 2: "(by extension) Small food items generally. Izakaya food is basically Japanese tapas." The usex suggests this isn't a real meaning of the word: if we say "a club sandwich is basically the American bacon butty" (not particularly true, but never mind) that isn't giving a new sense to "bacon butty". More like an alienans. Equinox 18:05, 10 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Googling "serve tapas" makes pretty clear that this implies serving Spanish-style appetizers. If I were to go to a party advertized as a tapas party and be served deviled eggs, chicken fingers and sliders, I'd be surprised and possibly disappointed.  --Lambiam 20:19, 10 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
On one hand, I see Books hits for phrases like "Japanese tapas" and "Asian tapas" (there are even entire books about these things); on the other hand, some of the top Google hits for phrases like "tapas in Japan" are about the rise in popularity of the Spanish snack in Japan, not about Japanese snacks. Compare also google books:"Chinese samosas". It's possible we should expand def 1 a little like "or sometimes by extension similar snacks in other cultures". - -sche (discuss) 19:34, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
