For non-Americans to understand this entry we might need a bit more cultural information. Specifically: Who writes the slip? What does it say? And what function does it have? I mean, it says in the example sentence that the teacher "accepted" a pupil's tardy slip. What will happen if it's not accepted? Thank you.
