I think to "thumb through" is a phrasal verb and thus warrants a separate entry. To "thumb one's nose (at)" is also verbal but I can't think of a way to use "thumb" as a verb on its own. Can anybody think of any examples? — Hippietrail 01:01, 29 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Says Merriam-Webster:

  1. vt to leaf through pages with a thumb
  2. to soil or wear by or as if by repeated thumbing
  3. to request or obtain (a ride) in a passing automobile by signaking with the thumb
  4. vi to turn over pages
  5. to travel by thumbing rides: hitch-hike

Parasitic -b?[edit]

Is it a linguistics term? I've never heard the term "parasitic" in such context. Tashi (talk) 23:51, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
