I live in Portland Maine. Once while working as a cashier here I heard someone ask me to put their tonic in their shopping cart instead of a bag. I said right away "What part of Massachusetts are you from?" It seems to be a shibboleth for just Massachusetts, not all of the Northeast, but I wont change it without someone else agreeing with me. This article says Eastern Massachusetts, which I have reflected in the entry. (Does DARE agree?) It would be good if we could find the 1888 Boston Daily Globe article to provide a quote from. Rich Farmbrough, 11:41, 27 June 2022 (UTC).Reply
