Roblox genre[edit]

WordyAndNerdy: My point was not that the first definition refers to Roblox (i.e., that tycoon’s second definition “A type of Roblox game in which players earn money which is then used to purchase upgrades.” is a replacement as a synonym, which it is not because it does not refer to Roblox games), but whether the genres/types of these Roblox and non-Roblox games are similar enough to merge them into a single definition instead of having two. I would say no. The management/business sim genre has been around since the 1980s. The general goal of these games is to simulate running a business such as a theme park, railroad company, restaurant, movie studio, etc. Tycoon game became a colloquial synonym of management sim/business sim because a number of popular sim games with "tycoon" in their title were released during the 1990s and early 2000s (e.g. Railroad Tycoon, Transport Tycoon, RollerCoaster Tycoon). Whereas Roblox "tycoons" seem to be a kind minigame created on the Roblox platform by Roblox players. As I understand it, Roblox is like a blend of Super Mario Maker and MineCraft , i.e. a simplified collaborative game-creation engine with a sandbox game-like presentation. Roblox "tycoons" obviously draw inspiration from management sims, but they are inseparable from Roblox. They run on the Roblox platform and rely on Roblox mechanics.
