Affecting water[edit]

Chambers 1908 also gives the definition "affecting water (of the moon, as governing the tide)", which seems to be a reference to Shakespearean usages ("the chaste beams of the watery Moon"; "the moonshine's watery beams"). Whether Shakespeare was actually referring to the tide seems to be uncertain: I suppose by another interpretation moonlight could be seen as weak and watery compared with sunlight.
