Could this be a misspelling of "welsh?" The OED includes that, with these given meanings, but not "welch." — This comment was unsigned.

Here in the US, it is welch with exactly this meaning; the word Welsh refers only to the nationality. --Connel MacKenzie 05:05, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not sure if welch noun should be listed as a derived term of the verb (along with welcher) though. Looks like someone really screwed up welcher. According to my Webster's, "welch" *is* derived from "welsh," a disparagment on people of Welsh ancestry. Lady Blanc
