Widespread use, but we should have cites anyway, IMO. There might be an RfD question. Do we have the right sense for this kind of usage of around#Adverb? DCDuring TALK 23:57, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would say this is SOP, just like the plain sense of walk around, drive around, go around, ride aroundMichael Z. 2013-06-26 05:39 z
As we have them, walk around looks SoP to me, but not go around. DCDuring TALK 09:08, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
How about cat around (which incidentally means something like "whore around"? I've never seen cat alone. Equinox 09:10, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would feel the need to see cat#Verb cited with a definition appropriate for the usage with use of cat contemporary to usage of cat around before challenging cat around. Even then, I might wonder about its SoPitude. MWOnline has "to search for a sexual mate — often used with around" for intransitive cat/ DCDuring TALK 09:24, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
How about [1], [2], [3], and [4]? and cat about, tomcat around, and tomcat about also exist. Chuck Entz (talk) 13:39, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
The -ing form seems to exist, but not so clearly the others. At least one case involves an elliptical reference to an immediately preceding catting around. The verb without around just doesn't seem to have much currency, even if we find it attestable.
To me the interesting cases would be more common collocations like fuck around, because fuck clearly stands alone in most of the senses found in usage of fuck around. I haven't looked into it. DCDuring TALK 14:41, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

whore around[edit]

I think that around functions as a kind of aspect marker with respect to a wide variety of verbs that can be found as derived terms at around#Adverb. It indicates repeated or continuous action. DCDuring TALK 00:13, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not all such words are unidiomatic, but I think this one is and other similar ones are. DCDuring TALK 00:15, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Delete per DCDuring, although I believe this requires a more nuanced sense of "around". "Sleep around", "whore around", "screw around", and even "shop around" suggest engaging in an activity with multiple partners (or at multiple venues), without showing faithfulness to any particular one of them. bd2412 T 13:08, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Keep. The current definition in "around"#Adverb does not do, and it is supposed to fit to "kidding around", which does not seem to have anything to do with multiple partners. Even if possibly sum-of-partish, I think this term should better be expressely defined in a dictionary entry. Furthermore, this entry does the job of indicating that you actually say this is English. Ditto for sleep around, screw around, and shop around. As an auxiliary hint, shop around”, in OneLook Dictionary Search. is defined in Collins, Macmillan and Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary; sleep around”, in OneLook Dictionary Search. is defined in Collins English Dictionary, Macmillan Dictionary, Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary, and Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. --Dan Polansky (talk) 18:30, 10 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
