This template should not be added to entries. But please do not delete it where it occurs. The links have not proven to be very reliable and the data is often a mess. It is possible that both the linking and the data will be improved. When this happens the functionality of this template will be restored.

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1=mandatory: should be the ITIS number found by searching Encyclopedia of Life on Wikipedia.Wikipedia .
  • |2=optional: optionally a name other than the pagename.
  • |noi=optional: by default the linked term will be italicized. To disable italicization, set |noi=1.

Examples

  • <ref name=EOL0>{{R:EOL}}; accessed on 2 Feb 2015</ref> yields[1]
    • This won't do at all.
      • Follow the first link in the first item under the References section below to validate this bad reference.
      • Note that the second link in the reference list goes not to the EOL page, but to the en:wikipedia article about the Encyclopedia of Life.
      • Don't forget to include the accessed date in your reference.
  • [2] <ref name=EOL1>{{R:EOL|1178570}}; accessed on 2 Feb 2015</ref> yields[2]
    • Better, but still not correct.
      • Without the second parameter on this page, the reference is still not correct because the name of this page (i.e., R:EOL/documentation) does not match the page name on EOL (Apus melba Alpine Swift).
      • However, since we specified the name parameter in the opening reference tag, <ref name=EOL1>, we can use just the closed tag <ref name=EOL1/> [2] in other locations on the page, and we'll get a another count/hit on this (bad) reference.
        • You may place the <ref name=EOL1> before the fully qualified <ref name=EOL1>{{R:EOL|1178570}}</ref>; however, if you do so, it makes finding the fully qualified reference difficult when it needs to be modified.
  • <ref name=EOL2>{{R:EOL|1178570|''Apus melba'' Alpine Swift}}; accessed on 2 Feb 2015</ref> yields[3]
    • Everything is good now[3].
    • Now we can use the closed reference tag<ref name=EOL2/>[3] with impunity, and we'll get another hit on this (good) reference[3].
