Template:file metadata

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

The following metadata is displayed when you click on this image in an entry:

Description: The |description= parameter is missing
Author: The |author= parameter is missing
Source: The |source= parameter is missing
License: Used under fair use; all rights reserved

Description[edit]

This template should be on every file uploaded locally to this wiki that is included in at least one dictionary entry.

It fulfils the designated format understood by the CommonsMetadata extension, which supplies metadata to the Media Viewer widget that appears when you click on an image embedded in an entry.

  • The description (|description= parameter) appears when you scroll down while Media Viewer is open. (The description directly below the image in Media Viewer is the image caption in the entry itself.) Few users will see it and it is not very important.
  • The author (|author= parameter) and source (|source= parameter) are shown in the bottom-left of the Media Viewer screen, in the format "author - source".
  • The license summary (optional, rarely needed |license= parameter) appears in the bottom-right of the Media Viewer screen. It should be kept brief. The default text is appropriate for fair-use (non-free) files.

Files that do not have this template will appear in Category:Files with no machine-readable license.

Usage[edit]
