You added withdot=1 to this[edit]

@Theknightwho Why did you do this? It messed up all the uses that followed it directly by a semicolon or other punctuation. In general it's a really bad idea to make a change like this, esp. without doing a bot run to clean up all the places that get messed up. Which other form-of templates did you change similarly? I think we need to undo them all. Benwing2 (talk) 07:40, 26 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Benwing2 My bad - I did this a while back and intended to go around fixing them, but never got around to it. I didn’t change any others (or at least I don’t remember changing any). Theknightwho (talk) 17:41, 26 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Theknightwho OK thanks. IMO these should consistently have an initial capital and maybe final period for English but neither for foreign languages. There was a discussion maybe in BP a month or two ago where something like this seemed the least of all evils when it comes to making the form-of templates consistent. Hello @Benwing2 and @Theknightwho,
What’s the plan to address this?
Now it seems that many entries are still messed up (e.g. Acadian), while others that can have, since this was implemented, adapted to withdot=1 (e.g. United States) by removing the manually-entered punctuation that once followed it, and since this has been allowed to persist for so long, an untold number of both kinds of entries now exist, meaning it cannot simply be rolled back without requiring lots and lots of entries like United States, which were manually fixed to suit, to manually revert those fixes.
Because of withdot=1, I'm unable to use this template on a Snoqualmie definition (#8 at the moment of writing) like this:
8. Ellipsis of The Summit at Snoqualmie., a ski resort located at Snoqualmie Pass, Washington.
Instead, I need to use {{ellipsis}}, which really shouldn’t be used in definitions, along with a bunch of hacks (yuck—check the source) to fix the different formatting:
8. Ellipsis of The Summit at Snoqualmie, a ski resort located at Snoqualmie Pass, Washington.
Also, note that the list of "form of" templates still shows this one as lacking withdot=1.

@Hermes Thrice Great Use |nodot=1. Please don't abuse {{ellipsis}} for this purpose as it's intended for Etymology sections. I am thinking, as I mentioned above, of changing the form-of templates to consistently include the dot only for English, but that's a big task. Benwing2 (talk) 21:54, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 Thanks, I didn’t see nodot=1 in the documentation, I guess it’s available to all {{form_of}} templates?
Will fix my mess ASAP.
Best,

@Hermes Thrice Great I think it's missing because User:Theknightwho changed the template without changing the documentation. Yes, it should be available on all form-of templates. Benwing2 (talk) 23:49, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
