Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as apel in 1458. Etymology unknown. Potentially derived from appel (“apple”), referring here to a forest of apple trees. Alternative etymologies include a derivation from a compound of Old Dutch aa (“river, watercourse”) and pôl (“pool”) and a derivation from Old Frisian apal (“shoring beam”).
