Etymology

From Latin testaceus (“covered with or having a shell or a tile-like covering”).

1. (obsolete) Any of several obsolete groupings of animals:
   1. The third order of Vermes in Linnean taxonomy, including shellfish and mollusks.
   2. The order of bivalves in Cuvieran taxonomy.
   3. Certain pteropods, including all with calcareous shells.
2. A taxonomic suborder within the order Rhizopoda – Certain protozoa bearing a shell with holes through which pseudopods protrude.
