Etymology[edit]

Literally, Three Hearts, in reference to the hearts of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, to whom the city's chapel is dedicated.

Alternatively, the city is on the center of a triangle between the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília, hence "Three Hearts".
