Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طرابلس غرب (tarâbülüs-i garb), from Arabic طَرَابُلُس الْغَرْب (ṭarābulus al-ḡarb, literally Tripoli of the West), as opposed to طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (ṭarābulus aš-šām, literally Tripoli of Syria) (whence Turkish Trablusşam (Ottoman Turkish طرابلس شام (tarâbülüs-i şâm))).
