Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German tresen, related to Tresor, from Latin thēsaurus (“treasure, chest, repository”), from Ancient Greek θησαυρός (thēsaurós, “treasure, vault”). Originally referred to a cash box in a bar counter, eventually shifting to refer to the counter itself.
