Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German tresen, related to Tresor, from Latin thēsaurus (treasure, chest, repository), from Ancient Greek θησαυρός (thēsaurós, treasure, vault). Originally referred to a cash box in a bar counter, eventually shifting to refer to the counter itself.
