Enhanced form of regular native Tur with -m from German Turm, both from Middle High German turn, from Old High German turn, torn, borrowed from Old French *torn, alternative form of tur, tour, from Latin turris, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek τύρρις (túrrhis). Germanic cognates include Dutch toren.
