Etymology[edit]

First attested as thuli in 970. Potentially derived from either Old Dutch tiele (agricultural land, pasture) (derived in turn from Proto-Germanic *teula- (agricultural land, pasture)) or Old Dutch tiuli (agricultural land, pasture) (derived in turn from Proto-Germanic *teula- (agricultural land, pasture) suffixed with *-ja-). Compare Thull, Tiel, Tilburg and Tull en 't Waal.
