Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Conrad.Irwin 17:03, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Translations of foreign words. (re [1])[edit]

Hi, at the moment the convention is that we let http://nl.wiktionary.org/ hold translations from Dutch to other languages, as we hold translations from English to other languages. I don't have a particular problem with adding these "not-through-English" translations, but it's probably not worth adding many of them here unless you persuade people that it's a good idea. Conrad.Irwin 12:13, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh ok, I just noticed that. I'm sorry, it makes more sense the way it is. --Hooiwind 12:14, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

One more thing... :D[edit]

If you enable WT:ACCEL, then when you create the entry for Waal it gives you a green link that automatically fills out the entry for Waalen. Conrad.Irwin 12:52, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the tips! --Hooiwind 12:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh my God I love your apps! --Hooiwind 13:04, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation[edit]

Formatting here does not put the IPA into the {{audio}} template. It is not designed to suport that. the correct formatting should look like this:

Please also note that I have used the correct primary stress marker. You have been using an apostrophe, which is a different charatcer. --EncycloPetey 16:46, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I will go through my edits and correct everything. --Hooiwind 16:47, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Does there happen to be an easy way to get a list of all pages I've ever touched? (my contribution list mentions too many pages multiple times...) --Hooiwind 16:50, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, no. The best substitute method might be to clear out your browser's cache, so that all links are blue. then, as you revise each page, the color will change and you'll know you've edited that page more recently. --EncycloPetey 16:56, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. One more thing: should it say "audio", or the word in question? So

Generally, it should say "audio", because not everyone will have images displayed in their browser. This provides a text clue about the nature of the link. The is not consistence about the capitalization. --EncycloPetey 17:01, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
