Armenian

Where are you reading etymologies like this? *sm̥- gives ամ- (am-), compare ամ (am). Almost all of your etymologies are incorrect. Vahag (talk) 19:26, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

I thought I remembered seeing this somewhere, but I'm pretty sure I incorrectly put it in. Yes, sm̥- obviously gives am-, sm̥- > hm- > am-, that was my fault. But "smiyeh2" is not the feminine form anyways. Even the Wiktionary declension page states so. The feminine form "semih2" would further not give մի, would it? Also, I haven't really edited much for "almost all my etymologies" to be incorrect. JameezWiki (talk) 20:39, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

What about this and this? Where did you encounter those etymologies? It looks like you are doing original research, not knowing much about Armenian historical sound laws. Vahag (talk) 20:48, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

You are correct, both of them are original research, as far as I can tell. I don't even remember editing the first one, and it is obviously very wrong. But how is the second one wrong? It looks like I will not do my own research anymore; I thought I knew something, I don't. JameezWiki (talk) 21:10, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

What is the variety of Armenian that you speak? I ask because this is dialectal. --Vahag (talk) 07:38, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

I know it is but since I've only ever heard it that way it seemed like a variation to me.

I am not sure which dialect I speak -- I am only sure I speak Eastern Armenian, from the pronunciations given.

Perhaps the Yerevani dialect, because after looking it up, it sounds closer to what I speak (e.g. ա instead of է for "is", and certain Russian loan words like "xolodilnik" instead of "sarnaran") JameezWiki (talk) 11:17, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Diaspora; I live in America. But most people in it speak Western Armenian (that's what I've heard). I do not. JameezWiki (talk) 11:47, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Then please add {{attention|hy|needs checking}} to the Armenian entries you create. Diasporans and foreigners are not good at distinguishing the register of Armenian words. I need to check add appropriate tags (colloquial, dialectal, rare, formal, etc.).

For example, this is the first time I hear շահախարդախ (šahaxardax). It needs appropriate warning labels so that people don't think it is a normal word. Vahag (talk) 12:35, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
