@Pål Jensen: Regarding your suggested etymology of bird I must apologise for not having given that due consideration. Currently, it is the most feasible of its deeper etymologies that it be onomatopoeic; which is also possibly the answer to the Proto-Altaic coincidentally similar form. However, there does need to be a reliable documented evidence before presenting this (or any other) etymology in the Entry Main Page, as you would already know. Andrew H.
