Etymology[edit]
From Tamil வேளாளர் (vēḷāḷar). Vellalar denotes Landlords and the Ruling classes. வேள் (vēḷ, “land, velir class, petty chiefs, and rulers”) + ஆளர் (āḷar, “lord, authority, the one belonging to”).
