Etymology[edit]

From Tamil வேளாளர் (vēḷāḷar). Vellalar denotes Landlords and the Ruling classes. வேள் (vēḷ, land, velir class, petty chiefs, and rulers) + ஆளர் (āḷar, lord, authority, the one belonging to).
