German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Welt (world) +‎ Pokal (cup).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈvɛltpoˌkaːl/
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Weltpokal m (strong, genitive Weltpokals, plural Weltpokale)

  1. (ball games) intercontinental cup (world championship for clubs)
    Synonyms: Klubweltmeisterschaft, Vereinsweltmeisterschaft

Usage notes[edit]

  • The word is a false friend of English world cup. The German equivalent for this is Weltmeisterschaft with regard to ball games (meaning a world championship for national teams). In individual sports such as skiing the German equivalent is Weltcup.
